Using Canvas to Deliver Course Content

Publishing Materials - Required Steps

If you already have Modules but find that they're not visible to students; please check that the Module(s) and the items/content within the Modules are published. You should see the green icons with check marks indicating that each Module and the individual content is published.

Even if the individual items within the Module are published, you must ensure the Module itself is also published.

Publish Options

Publish All button - Use this button to quickly publish or unpublish all modules and items.

Publish button (one by one) - Use these buttons to publish individual modules and individual items.

In the example screenshots above, the Modules would be:

"Week 1 Test"

"Week 1"

The "items"/content would be:

"Week 1 Overview"

"Week 1 Readings"

"TestFile1_sp24.pdf"

"Test Paper"

"Assignment #1"

"Week 1 Test Assignment"

"Test Assignment"

Creating Folders in Modules

1. Navigate to the Home page of your Canvas course site.

2. Click the Readings & Assignments button.

3. You are now in Modules. Click the blue + Module button to create a new module.

4. Name the module what you would name it as your desired folder name and then click the blue Add Module button.

5. Click the “or choose files” link to add files from your computer to the folder.

6. Choose the file(s) you’d like to upload.

7. Click the Open button (or equivalent depending on your device type) to begin uploading to the Canvas module.

8. Once you’re ready to have students view the Module and items, click the publish icon button.

NOTE: You must make sure your Module and the items within are published for students to see the content. You may verify by using the View as Student button at the top right of the Canvas screen.

9. Continue steps 3-8 to create new “folders” and add files into them.

Already added documents into the Canvas "Files" section?

Note: The Files section in the course navigation menu is purposely hidden from student view and should remain that way. If you've already added documents directly to the Files section, you should follow these steps to add them to Modules and make the visible to students.

1. Click the Plus symbol to add more items to the Module. Or use steps 3-5 in the section above to create a new Module.

2. Click on Assignment to open the drop down menu and choose File.

3. Select the file(s)/document(s) you want one by one or select multiple.

4. Click the blue Add Item button.
