French Maritime Ordinance of 1681

The late 17th century saw the development of marine laws for several countries, the most significant of which was the Ordinance adopted in France during the reign of Louis XIV.  Through royal act, customary laws of the sea were made part of the national law enforceable in a French Admiralty Court.  The bulk of the Ordinance was moved into the Code de Commerce upon its adoption in 1807 and maritime law then became considered simply as a branch of commercial law, with the abolishment of the Admiralty Court and the move of these cases to commercial courts.

Shown here is a commentary on the Maritime Ordinance by Balthazard-Marie Emerigon from 1780.
