Consolato del Mare

While the exact source of this collection of maritime laws is not certain (France, Italy, and Spain each claim it as theirs), it is likely that it first appeared in Catalonia in the 13th or 14th centuries.  Important as a collection of the maritime laws of several countries, it was applied by the Consulate of the Sea in Valencia.  It was translated into many languages and was considered to be the code of maritime commerce in force throughout the Mediterranean until well into the 18th century.  It is one of the first collections to deal with prize law, the law governing capture at sea during an armed conflict.

Shown here is an Italian version from 1567.
