Attendance Tracking

What is Roll Call?

Roll Call is Canvas's offering for attendance tracking. The tool is called Roll Call but on Canvas you should look for the label "Attendance".

It offers a simple solution and interface built directly into Canvas with student data.

Enabling "Attendance" / Roll Call

1. Navigate to your Canvas course site and click the Settings in the left course navigation menu.

2. Click the Navigation tab within Settings.

3. Scroll down and look for the “Attendance” in the list. Either drag and drop or click the 3 dots on the right of the Attendance box and click Enable.

4. After enabling, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the Save button.

5. Lastly, look in the course navigation menu for the now enabled Attendance tool. Click Attendance to continue getting started.

Getting Started

Interface

The default screen when you navigate to Attendance / Roll Call will be a list view of the enrolled students. From this screen you can quickly take attendance or adjust previous days’ attendance.

If you have more than one section, you may select the correct section from the course name drop down menu.

You may create a seating chart, but it is not necessary to use this attendance tool. Please keep in mind that student pictures will appear here only if the student added one themselves to their personal Canvas profile; this is optional for the student.

For more information on creating a seating chart with this tool, click here. Please note that the seating chart is a basic grid option only and is not configured to our Law School rooms and there is no printing feature.

Click the Calendar icon to quickly navigate to a particular date.

Settings

Click the settings gear in the top right corner to adjust settings as desired. We suggest going to Roll Call Settings and checking the box “Do not count attendance toward final grade” since the Law School does not use the grade book within Canvas as a system of record.

Taking Attendance

1. In your Canvas course site, click the Attendance in the left course navigation menu.

2. Go to each student and click the circle icon to toggle to the correct attendance status (present, not present, etc.). Or click the more button and adjust the attendance status through a larger menu.

  • To mark the student as present and on time, click one time (green check mark icon).
  • To mark the student as not present, click two times (red X icon).
  • To mark the student as late, click three times (orange clock icon).
  • To unmark the attendance status, leave the button as the default (gray no symbol icon). The unmarked attendance status also indicates an excused absence.

When you take Attendance with this Roll Call tool, it will create Assignments in the Canvas Assignments tool and Gradebook. Both faculty and students should ignore this, as the Law School does not grade within Canvas. This process cannot be prevented but if you'd like information on removing or editing each Roll Call Assignment, please see the Canvas guide here.

Reports

Roll Call has a convenient Report feature accessible through the Settings gear icon in the top right of the tool.

Input the desired date range and then click the Run Report button. The report by default will be sent to your @law email account.

Go to your @law email account and open the link which will download a csv file onto your computer.

Note: If you'd like to get a Roll Call report for an individual student, you can input the student's SIS ID; find this ID in the People section of Canvas.
