Federal Legislative History

United States Code (USC)

Official subject compilation of federal laws. "A complete new edition of the Code ('main edition') is printed by the Government Publishing Office (GPO) every six years, and five annual cumulative supplements (designated as Supplements I through V) are printed in intervening years. Each main edition and annual cumulative supplement is current through the laws enacted as of a particular session of Congress, as explained more fully on the title page of each volume." The "Amendments" annotations at the end of each section of a particular title give useful information about later amendments to the law.

United States Code Annotated (USCA)

Unofficial version of the U.S.C. published by Thomson Reuters (Westlaw). Contains the same text of the law as it appears in the official code. More current than the official version. Print volumes are updated with annual supplements called "pocket parts" and periodic supplemental pamphlets. Extensive annotations following the code sections provide citations to courts cases, federal regulations, law review articles, and legislative history documents.
