Technology Considerations

Equipment Recommendations

To use Zoom you will need one of the following:

  • Computer (macOS or Windows with speakers and a microphone, webcams are recommended but not required)

  • Mobile Device (iOS or Android)

  • Phone (mobile device, desk, or landline)

Most computers should have a webcam and microphone built into the computer, this should suffice for the virtual learning environment. If your computer does not have a microphone and speakers (or webcam) you’ll need to purchase them to properly use Zoom.

If you are looking to purchase equipment for Zoom, the sections below list a few Zoom-recommended webcams, microphones, and speakers. Most of the products cost between $30 and $100 and will work sufficiently at either your desk or conference/meeting room.

Monitor Recommendations

Before considering an extra monitor, make sure you know what type of output your computer supports. Most computers use USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) or Mini Displayport (Thunderbolt 2) as an output and most monitors use HDMI as an input. You may need an adapter to go from one of these outputs from the computer to use an HDMI monitor.
