The jurisdiction of the House Committee on the Judiciary includes the "Protection of trade and commerce against unlawful restraints and monopolies." The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet "has jurisdiction over the Administration of the U.S. Courts, the Federal Rules of Evidence, Civil and Appellate Procedure, judicial ethics, patent, trademark law and information technology."

The jurisdiction of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary includes the "Protection of trade and commerce against unlawful restraints and monopolies." The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property has jurisdiction over "(1) the United States Patent and Trademark Office; (2) the United States Copyright Office; (3) Oversight of the functions of the federal government as they relate to intellectual property; (4) Patents; (5) Copyrights; (6) Trademarks; and (7) Trade Secrets."

The FCC regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. It was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and operates as an independent U.S. government agency overseen by Congress.

The Federal Trade Commission Act grants the FTC power to investigate and stop deceptive trade practices, which may include Internet advertising, marketing, and sales.
