This volume was rebound in 1894 by Leon Gruel (1841 - 1923).  Gruel took bookbinding from a business to an art, using both contemporary and earlier “lost” techniques to create one-of-a-kind bindings for his clientele.  This volume, which Gruel created for display at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, is an excellent example of the artistic binding style popular at the time.  It includes gilt stamping on the covers, spine, board edges, and end papers with red and black decorative leather inlays on the cover and spine, black woven endpapers, and marbled page edges hidden by gilding.
